The World Aging Population Is On The Rise - 1739 Words

The worlds aging population is on the rise and has been for some time. It is estimated that by the year 2030 that there will be â€Å"seventy million Americans over the age of 65† of that â€Å"fifteen million suffer from a mental disorder† of some kind (Gary S. Moak, 2011). This paper is intended to showcase the issue as it relates to policy as well as recommendations needed to curtail this ever increasing issue. With the rise in medical expenses, the aging and elderly community suffers from inadequate health care (Gary S. Moak, 2011). In an effort to alleviate this growing health issue, priority needs to be placed on key concepts such as â€Å"extensive knowledge of the aging process†, â€Å"proactive and anticipatory care†, a practice structure with a multidisciplinary team†, as well as, â€Å" good communication skills†, â€Å" and a clear sense of the patients values, goals and preferences† just to name a few (Cassel, 2009). Mentally ill individuals are at a disadvantage from the onset of the disease. This is because they are often times not diagnosed at the early stages. Older individuals are at a larger disadvantage due to the fact that they mostly live alone.
